Ward Cleaver told June that in all perspicacity, she could leave any time she wants since he does not cheat. She felt rather reassured by this in that Ward was confident about his basketball playing and didn't need her to feel good about himself; nor did he demand a commitment. It makes a mid-western woman nervous if a man thinks about commitment too soon contrary to her sordid communal expectations. These are the great great grandchildren of women who spent a lot of time on the upper floor of saloons as settlers to make enough money to save the family and buy the land back from the railroad company. Who knew?
