You might have the best of everything and never appreciate it. You really need to be secure because he is a faithful man and you need that faithfulness above and beyond just having his faithful seed available to you for children. As the bible says, A faithful man, who can find(Proverbs 20:6) and who can appreciate him when you take faithfulness in your cultural, your family's  or your cosmo paradigm as weakness or as geekiness that you confuse with some tendency toward homosexuality.

Apparently, a new program to encourage native entrepreneurship will entail $10000.00 Starbuck Franchises with "sincerely good" ingredients because Jews and Christians, like all other citizens,believe in food being "sincerely good". For instance, a coke should make you feel refreshed whether you buy it in the aboriginal desert or elsewhere. With the consumption of that "Sincerely Good" oatmeal, you should get younger with every bite as one will expect of oatmeal.   Peter�s concern over food laws may well seem petty or silly to us. But Willimon reminds us that "only these laws stood in the way of the assimilation" of the Jews as Jews. "They identified, demarcated faithfulness in the midst of incredible pressure to forsake the faith, drop one�s particularities and become a good citizen of the Empire. A little pork here, a pinch of incense to Caesar there, and it will not be long before the faith community will be politely obliterated. We must not read this story from the safe vantage point of a majority religion where broad-mindedness and toleration cost the majority nothing, but rather, read the story as it was first heard--from the minority point of view, people for whom a bit of pork or a pinch of incense or a little intermarriage was a matter of life and death for the community. The dietary laws are not a matter of etiquette or peculiar culinary habits. They are a matter of survival and identity for Jews" (Acts, 96).

4.  The Jerusalem Conference [= Jerusalem Council = Apostolic Council] (15:1-35):   see Harris 303-5

Background (15:1-5): The crisis was brought about when some men from Judea came to Antioch and began teaching that circumcision was necessary for salvation. Paul later (in Galatians) would refer to Jewish Christians who insisted that Gentiles keep the Torah as JUDAIZERS.

Paul and Barnabas disputed this and they, along with others, were appointed to go to Jerusalem and confer with the apostles and elders. The controversy thus centered on 2 basic questions:

--how does a person get salvation?

--what is the relationship between Judaism and Christianity?

Discussion (15:6-21)

Peter testified first, relating his incident with Cornelius, and charging the assembly that they not put a hindrance on the Gentiles that even they as Jews had been unable to bear. Paul and Barnabas followed with their testimony. Finally James (the half-brother of Jesus) spoke, asking the assembly not to make it difficult for the Gentiles, on the basis of Amos 9:11ff.

Decision (15:22-35)

The decision of the Jerusalem Conference amounted to a recognition that salvation is by faith in Jesus alone, without circumcision. Also, they decided to send a letter to Antioch; they would not give up all of their Jewish heritage, though certain aspects of it would not be binding on Gentiles.  The letter was sent to Antioch by Paul and Barnabas, accompanied by Silas and Judas Barsabbas.

The Gentiles were charged to keep 3 points of the Jewish Torah:

(1) abstain from food offered to idols.

(2) abstain from eating the meat of strangled animals (based on the Old Testament principle that "the life is in the blood").

(3) abstain from sexual immorality.

Robert Wall notes that "James recognizes that a convert to the faith must give up various practices.  While the community welcomes all who truly repent--as God welcomes them--there are limits to what the community marks out as 'Christian'" (New Interpreter's Bible Commentary 222).

It has been suggested that the decision of the Jerusalem Conference enabled the early Christian movement to break out of the confines of Judaism to become a universal religion.  Had the early church decided that circumcision was necessary for all Gentile converts, surely this new religion would not have appealed to as many.

Unfortunately the Jerusalem Conference did not solve the Judaizer issue. The Judaizers merely went underground, whereas they had formerly been overt. They later caused problems in Galatia, prompting Paul�s letter to the Galatians.

Bargaining with God...It is a wrestle.

Jacob wrestled with God on a bargain while Cain did not. Cain was promised peace of mind and soul if he would just submit. In many ways, Cain is like Satan the 2nd( who killed, coveted his brother's obedient work and his peace with God, and destroyed).  The promise of salvation by grace through faith is free and free to receive but there may be a fulcrum moment when you will have to subdue an anger or current in your life(possibly ancestral) by deciding that you will sue God on his word where he says that current(sin) will not have dominion over you. Romans 7 is not an excuse. Romans 9,10,11, and 12 is an opportunity to claim the faith of Abraham. For your own personal reasons, you may not wish to claim that you are a messianic Jew and Abraham did not refer to himself as such but he recognized Jehovah as the one and only true God. It may help in subduing the duality of soul to claim that you are living in/walking in the faith of Abraham until any such ( cartoon-like) duality as described in Romans 7 goes away and leaves. The Lord experienced it in the wilderness( as he sued on the word) and the book of Luke says that the devil left Him only to seek another opportune moment. It's good to see the opportune moments and the situations through which the Lord's enemy and adversary brings provocation and distraction.  Someone may start a book of Acts(Acts 2) denomination soon because there is truly only one message. It might help. Read Acts 4 with emphasis on verse 13 to 16 as it appears here below:

 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. 15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrinand then conferred together. 16 “What are we going to do with these men?”

These are important observations because Mary was not indecisive and said that "...with God all things are possible."  The house of our hearts and minds is very spiritual. A house is a habitation of light construction( a tabernacle)). While Lot had to fend off some honery people so that they would get away from his children at the front door of his habitation, he was assisted by the decisive prayers  of his cousin Abraham who did not have any bad tv or music to divide his mind although there may have been some other shenanigans going on that may have involved temple workers in the wrong temples and the like. In either case, he chose to keep his mind and heart focused. But, today the  minds of many are so divided( I really can't speak for you) and are unable to bring deliverance to their cousin, city, legislature, town or country. We are halting between two opinions on many issues while the devil and his agents in Sodom and Gomorrah( with their evident agenda) are very decided. There is no contest when we halt between two opinions. Your enemies are running after you like a zombie on weed laced with lsd. It's cultivated right into the leaves itself.  However, there should be a sufficiently voluminous criminal code and statutes in the legislature or town hall to keep "them" and their unnatural drives away from your home and children. The various charters should be effective as Abraham's prayerful legacy for his family. It numbers in the billions ( not just 8 to 15 million).   Hockey or basketball  may be foundational social games in any society but the school environment is the true training module for life as a microcosm of society. Hockey ( a rather anti-social game)  is not a training module for society. The point of the legislature is to ensure peace. The derogation of legislation to determine whether someone fits in to some fallacious vacuum of testing temperament or sex drive such that legislation is ignored clearly anarchically is the antithesis of peace and amounts to terrorism. Ultimately, they want to know what type of hockey player you are. But, the most evident training module for like in society is a school environment where no punching is allowed in front of the principal or referee. It's in the house rules.  Some justify this derogation as a game but someone has pissed (shipped) their pants by now; the angry one who thought that it was all fun and games but someone has lost a lot of respect while in such shows of heinous disregard for the public, families and his own culture. No one doubts his or her ability on the ice but if you are trying to tell everyone browner than a plain donut that they are immigrants, then the disposition of a society who invites them to invest and work and partake at the table of brotherhood should be that of a hotel desk clerk or a playboy bunny.Yes: this is your land and we are immigrants. Knowing and studying your culture and ways reverentially is the key to graduation. People are paying taxes so that you can be a mammonaholic. You are in control of your choice of weed or cocaine as well. No one is arguing and no one is telling you that patronage does not exist. There is no argument.  Without a doubt, everyone can find a good deal at Kroegers. It's just that not every immigrant will understand that you have to prove your willingness to punch and punch back before we take the peace of and enjoy the legislation. They might want to play tennis anyway. Without a doubt, women can punch women very well in hockey. They have proven their suffrage but can everyone just have the peace of the legislation now?  We are your guests so just treat the guests like the most genius hotel clerk on the verge of promotion every day. The tin man was a physical or emotional eunuch and on the inside( he was given a heart that lacked self appreciation and that only worked to seek love from others( or from those outside of his home) instead of love of self and from his own family; with all due respect.

In a new movie plot, While it was one TIPI  for one man and one woman (sort of like the concept of a Matrimonio bed in spanish), Cabot and others did not maintain their deals of peace when they arrived and worked to alter the recollection of this native culture as they diffused the native family and such structures. It is a culture on top of a culture where the habit of the cave that involved immediate tactile gratification in the darkness of the cold  existed as a form of false light.  While this drive for tactile gratification could lay at the top of some culture or its order as an evil concupiscence, the motive of procreation will lead to a depth of social peace at the top of that order where the family structure is always central to the maintenance of a successful and viable modern and post-modern society. It's always hard to stave away from the only single mother structure that you know, but let your neighbours who choose the two parent structure co-exist with you in peace. Your children will meet in school, will have to show up at the same time for the start of class and will have to follow the same syllabus across the state, city, town or territory.  Wombs don't wear makeup and nor do they have bra, waist and other sizes(36-24-32?-bombshell(Kaboom!!).  But, they should be free to care for the person with whom they have chosen to raise children. Gay marriage is quite sensational but its not a solution to engendering a more civil society if nothing shall matter but a gay marriage mantra. Maybe "Happy, Fair, and Just Community and good socio-political governance" regardless of all the intervening multiculturalism and religious differences is a more prosperous mantra. McDonalds would agree. They sell Perrier over the counter in France. Batman would fight for it but covertly though. He has his Scotch-Irish(Amerindian) ear to the ground. Tonto is Batman's grandfather after all. It only takes two generations. You should know this!?! Sunlight is from the sun and social and emotional acceptance is from the son. It's above and beyond any human and is provided freely to anyone who will accept it(Ephesians 2:8-9). Strengthen what remains and is about to die. Salt saves. Salt preserves. Dropped but not discounted. It's been great enjoying your sincere and generous cupcakes; cupcake! But you don't have to be a "bit-part" that the old madam has asked you to play in the very end. It's not about sex and attention. This is about the evil commodification of natural intimacy. You asked for a friend of the opposite gender with whom you could enjoy some quiet time, bible studies and an intimate dessert or Batman sitcom-drama. Be thankful for the friendship.

The experience of being dropped is quite tremendous. It could be that someone showed you a great deal of acceptance early(5-10 years old) as a Fair or Circus performer or employee. You were the most stimulated young man or woman in the town but they let go right away with a failure in commitment. In the alternative, you were accepted on a special rep baseball team for the entire summer but then dropped because someone else was truly related to the team mother. 

You were used for photos in a special 16-95 year old talent show but you weren't really old enough but then had your photos rejected for that reason. In either case, you had the experience of being loved and dropped summarily. You felt used evidently and noticed 35 years later on in life that you would choose to be with or love someone but would let them go for no reason. You would pick them up again passionately and beg them to come back and then let them go for your own confessed lack of a good reason but you would do your best to create one to justify your apparent formal education or formal ignorance.  You eventually confessed that it was due to breakdowns; sometimes occasioned by self-rejection due to weight issues or due to pms as claimed. You are not alone in this habit of irresponsibility and a few magazines like Moons and Cosmo were started on the eve of the first issue of Playboy to make sure you could excuse your new home industry when the postman might ring twice.  You would do this over and over again in several relationships claiming that you were afraid of being used for something like your sexy milk cow imitations (or used for a hug or a kiss; maybe something more)and then you finally went through all the available men in the world( some of them you created by flirting with them so that they would leave their wives or cause their wives to leave for your flirting). If you could get to the last man on the planet after 30 years of your cycle, you would realize that you were using yourself for sex( while they wanted a genuine relationship) and failing to forgive the first person who caused you to feel accepted and then dropped; dropped and discounted. Ironically, you find the discounts in the stores like a ferret. You value discarded items found on the ground or in flea markets. You keep finding them and you pick them up.  You give the deals away eventually and then you find more but hopefully in the end, you have found yourself , will forgive hopefully that little league coach or photo studio manager who did not keep your photos for use in the long term since you were really too young and it was inappropriate and you would never understand. But, its time to heal though. You just left the one man you have called back 80 times (his name starts with an R or a C) after breaking up and he only stayed because you would show genuine signs of desire to heal and be free with copious amounts of basil and other supposedly relieving herbs but now you are just being abusive. You thought the bible was about a freedom from difficulty but only people on a journey some where need to face a red sea with angry people chasing them with weapons and intent to kill. But, you are not here to support on such journeys and tend to scatter. But, you beg people to help you as you seek to overcome your addiction to yourself as expressed in substance abuse and other more tactile addictions when your boyfriend or girlfriend is not around.  You need to heal and take time with the next one to finally commit to growing, healing and forgiving the little league manager who sowed the experience of being dropped and discounted. In the Lord, you are now healed from being dropped and discounted. Let that man go because he has seen you as you requested.  Read Romans 8.

If you want to break up with your boyfriend or spouse and you had a great laugh two days ago in a bible study and everybody knows, then just be honest. You might have just changed your mind in prayer. But, you asked him to help you with your habits and to be patient. You can't loose if you communicate. Send a text or an email. It's good enough. Ask him or her if they got the memo and feel really cold and officious about it if you want since you have occupied your mind and heart with the Lord's business. You could also communicate in the manner that exemplifies your station as a joint heir in Christ.

Anyway, I have to go and play tennis and check out a squash court. But, everyone hopes that their mother will give them exactly what they want for Christmas such as the big wheels or the Green machine toy. So, what is it that you want?  You can have control over your train set and your remote uh control barbie cars.  There is no doubt. When you get older, you might believe that you should have the special collector's set sold only in Germany or somewhere around there with the funny logo that you don't really understand. It's in a different language and originates from a culture much older than yours. What constitutes your culture is the surficial experience of choice and more choice with reasonable prices and quality. It also constitutes sides, winning, losing and games. It is a paradigm and its success is its guttural simplicity but what if you attempt to choose something over which you have no ultimate control where you end up with little choice. The choice is light and dark or death and life. You might win  in the end and your pain is anesthetized. But, the ego is the only looser in the absolute end.   It is the only enemy in the end. Many lives are saved as you ask  how to say that in Cuban or Puerto Rican and its hard to see since you argue that everybody loves chocolate and should want it when they want it. Who would argue.  There is nothing wrong with chocolate lovers societies?

With respect to control, you can grow up to have control over your own house and affairs and you can tell your children to stand their ground. In telling your children to stand their ground, you have resigned your role of influence to nothing more than monitoring the testimony of the assailant. But, you want to have influence some where if not outside of the home since you relegated your influence to the self-justification of personal emotions. Abraham Lincoln said something about bad laws a long, long time ago.    Your wife might let you have your way in the house or she may decide to relegate your influence and your official duties. But, there is no doubt she has chosen you to oversee the continual success as a great Deacon in the church and there is an award and yearly celebration for being the 43rd or 42nd such deacon. The last one was white(but you don't say white; you just say Deacon) and people used to throw eggs at his Kia (George W. Bush's limousine was egged anytime it was seen in public)when he drove into church because he argued that pre-emptive strikes on angry Seventh Day Adventists seeking a superior authority was appropriate but the members of the church disagreed. They said such pre-emptive strikes was anathema to their culture.

The point is that  a Hanso Sword fight( or fighting with blow torches)  is not a basketball game but it might feel like it for a brief while. Ultimately, everybody gets a really bad burn and it might be soo easy to celebrate your home grown American culture of games, praying for wins, burgers, chicken and hotdogs and idolized lusty women who demand attention.   Anyway, I am marrying my High School girlfriend next week; so I am told.  She is a farmer's daughter and the bible study aficionado.

Unnatural desires....

The bible says that the gates of hell shall not prevail against the church.  Romans 1 describes certain desires and inclinations that are unnatural.  But, will such desires prevail against the church?  The church is described as a house of worship.  Lot had a house and it was his place of worship. It was assaulted while certain individuals in Sodom and Gomorrah tried to break in and take it over. Abraham prayed for Lot and while his home and city would not be saved, Lot was granted safe passage but his wife looked back to her peril.   The Church is a house for worship and should remain so. Our hearts and minds are a place for worship while we seek to bring our habits of eating, speech and meditation in to submission to worship.  There are certain images, movies and videos that you would not entertain in the House of worship. You should not entertain them in your mind or hearts. If you fall asleep watching a game on TV, as many good believers do, and then wake up to be assaulted by someone's bad video recreation of her parent's conceiving her, turn off the TV.  Read Romans 7 and be gentle with yourself but the best way to close the door to suggestion and temptation is to be decisive about what you want and enjoy your time with your family and spouse. Claim that you are walking in or living in  the faith of Abraham( I am a messianic Jew). The Lord is sensitive to you. Read Genesis 4 and know that sin does not have to have dominion over you unless you let it. Be patient and  forgive yourself.  Watch a good contextual dvd like Shakespeare in Love and then apply 1st Corinthians 13 with lots of gentility.

Symbols are very important. No one knows why a nation that claims to be under God has an "Egyptian book of the dead" symbol on its currency(ies). Many Masonic practices are taken from the Book of the Dead apparently. Moses left Egypt though. They say the Statue of Liberty symbolised the location of a promised land. But, there may have been a lack of honor or faithful commitment toward maintaining such a code. The question is why? The code represents honor for a household, homes and possessions and that of your neighbours'.  But, there is emotional difficulty in doing this if much of your formative life as  Abraham's son, Ishmael, may have been spent in a wilderness alone with a rejected mother fighting off wild animals and traders although she received an excellent promise that came to pass. You might have had to steal too many running shoes or apples from a caravan passing by. But, this was just preparation for Ishmael’s greatness.  It seems that Ramses was an Ishmaelite who faced an adopted son of  Isaac in his home. His name was Moses.  Akhenaten was certainly a pharaoh who honored the one God and the natural laws given to men for commodious living. Abraham met such a Pharaoh  while traveling with his wife; Sara.  He was one of Akhenaten's ancestors most evidently since the fear of this G-d is not common but it is leadership for the greater good of the population and all of mankind. 

By the time King John gave his promise, it was to all citizens regardless of their essential ancestry( Isaac or Ishmael).  This was to ensure that all citizens could benefit from the promise. Such a promise celebrates balance and shuns absolute rule except for the absolute rule to enforce the code of communal living(Leviathan).  Louis the 16th and Herod( in the bible) seem to show similar tendencies on the issue of codes or commandments of communal living. It's as if they want to kill King John or his happy people who wish to benefit from the promise of codified communal living.   They may have been children of Ishmael or partially so. They may have been children of Absalom.  

Our current order celebrates codes of communal living, parliaments, senators and elected representatives to govern by rules.  Officers take oaths to uphold bills of rights. Bills of Rights might provide more certainty in the end. 

When you see sudden shifts in attitudes or systems failing to honor their own codified laws, maybe Ramses or one of his grand children showed up again. Arguably, Ramses may have been just as adopted as Moses but from the house of Ishmael. They may not have been related to Akhenaten and his line and if they were, it is likely that Ramses and Moses would have had peace. But, everybody has the promise now under Balfour or King John or some act of some legislature. Where is Leviathan to save his computers designed for the citizens' safety (as numerated and monitored) from being hacked?  In the alternative, Ramses ancestors may have been partially or fully Ishmaelite. It is not clear what import this would have on his psyche but he was clearly a very angry student of Nietzsche and not of Christ)  and also partially a son of Isaac but in a world that celebrated pure breeds, he was like to get very angry with being genetically on the fence and not appreciating the promise of Christ to be a joint heir. Was it that his ancestor's would design a system for everyone's commodious living regardless of ancestry maybe and someone would come along as a hireling( like Herod) to sort of frustrate the efficient working of the system and ignore its slow and sure dismantling?  Watch Hanna( the movie) with Eric Bana. Human love is directed to the other person for his own sake, spiritual love loves him for Christ's sake. Therefore, human love seeks direct contact with the other person; it loves him not as a free person but as one whom its binds to itself. It wants to gain, to capture by every means; it uses force. It desires to be irresistible, to rule. Right here is the point where spiritual love begins. This is why human love becomes personal hatred when it encounters genuine spiritual love. It nurses and cultivates and ideal(idol), it loves itself, and nothing else in the world. Spiritual love, however, comes from Jesus Christ, it serves Him alone.

Now, the reason why the Lord told you to turn the other cheek(Luke 6:29) is two fold: 1. It was for the same reason that he said render to Caesar what is his. He has the authority with a centurion in downtown Galilee. So, call the centurion ;2. It is because you are told in the old testament that vengeance is the Lord's. He shall address your need; and 3. The last resort is to use a defensive form of Kung fu that teaches you to let the appointment throw the first punch and you turn the other cheek. Any decision to hold to one gospel while ignoring the entire old testament as well as Hebrews, Ephesians, Galatians and Corinthians is not a hope for understanding ( see Jeremiah 9:23).  It is not a faith but a personal deception.

Some of us studied really hard and once we were released into independence on certificate day from regular discipline, training and trusting for oats and tuition, we rebelled as if we believed having a piece of paper on the wall gave us a special status in Heaven to just do whatever we want. As soon as you got the degree, you left your church and threw out your bible sort of(Mark 4). You stopped praying and relying. David suffered this for a little(Deuteronomy 8 and Deuteronomy 11), lost a child, killed a man for lust and sowed regret into his story. There is no special division of Heaven called "graduate" or anything similar to that. Jesus passed His exam; so did Joseph( son of Jacob).

Luke 4: 13. You heard of the temptation in the wilderness and in the garden. There always seems to be something natural around when Jesus is about to start or finish something and is then tempted. In spite of his temptations, He never said the devil made me do it. Jesus grew in knowledge, it says, and sat habitually in the temple to uh learn what he was inspired to learn.

Necessity is the mother of invention. Many inventions are the result of inspiration. These inventions include the miraculous discovery and application of electricity. But, electricity was around since before the Egyptians and Christ. He did say you would do greater things; didn't he? Dr. Diesel was a devout Christian. However, the inventions and their blessings in efficiency should never lead us to loose site of or thankfulness for the inspirer. Dr. Diesel remained thankful.

I knew an English professor with a Bath accent who realised that his posh girlfriend with a southern accent was quite posh with her accent, a drug addict and quite able with her accent to celebrate her formal ignorance and her lack of civility (public and private) so long as she read the Metro or free Evening Standard once a day and bought the right handbags while wagging her tongue. We have to respect ourselves and our civilisation with as much formal commitment to the same and if we don't we will subconsciously bring ourselves back to a beginning where we will have to remember, once again, the beginning.

If you lost your way and could not find the path back to pineapples and sunny beaches for a very long time, I would probably be upset, covetous and irritable as well and when my long lost cousin shows up looking all tanned 1000 years later, I might manifest a subconscious abandonment/resentment complex when he is around. You have no facebook to heal the gap and see the old beach. You do your best to describe the bright beach to your children. It might become genetic. You might try and program your offspring to feel the same. You could just buy a beach house in Majorca.

The Lord passed His exams by submitting to His teacher and Maker and sought to help others. Read Isaiah 61. Your mission/purpose begins in this arena. Then go out into all the world. It is said that Satan rebelled and became a spoiler. This is also true of Darth Vader in the popular pop culture movie franchise. There is a smiling happy Swiss Chocolate gene and more of it that will have the same feeling every human enjoys when you drink a coca cola for the first time.

I saw someone working emotionally with little emotional games with his neighbours in a nicely redeveloped north west (or other) side neighbourhood to achieve what amounted to open fridges, homes and open relationships. He or they could not stand his neighbour's commitment to monogamy and his commitment to brushing twice a day. He called the monogamous neighbour racist and the monogamy lover was only three shades lighter.

In a new movie plot, you have a discussion where you need to understand how a country can send missionaries all over the world  to share the gospel( ten commandments of communal living) and then fail to ensure the propagation and safekeeping of such values in its own society ? Maybe they need to have a GED DAY ( As in D day at home). You can't always get the big wheels by Mattel when you want it.  It would be wrong to assault a gay person or any other minority but the whole entire system does not have to change fundamental definitions of foundational and necessary societal concepts to accommodate these new phenomena of social behavior when there are other methods to protect and ensure property for loved ones. These methods can be simplified and registered for the loved one.  It may be ludicrous for some to ask but shall a dog become a human being for mammal marriage?

He meant to say "powerful Principal" in a school since employees in a public service environment are not interested in power but service. He must have misspoke when he said President. Power is synonymous with the denial of the quest for the same as a public employee.

Then, they can run to TESCO USA  to get a part-time job to finance their happy times.  It is quite the nation-building scheme that ensures a mutual benefit to all stake holders on both sides of the border.

Some Ideas....an excerpt.

Laclau and Mouffe provide a greater sense of the new specific­ity of the political, where ideas of a ruling class are no longer the dominant or hegemonic ideology and have been replaced by a "...field of styl­istic and discursive heterogeneity without a norm."^[i] This is an important consideration as the way in which political decisions are made and conflicts are resolved have begun to reflect social heterogeneity through the inclusion of new and once marginal­ised voices in the political process.^[ii]  This is the result of transformations in social relations which have provided the framework necessary for the question­ing of subordi­nate relations and the demanding of new rights,^[iii]  Leading to the politicization of social relations and a new logic of equival­ence which extends itself from workers struggles to struggles of women, racial, sexual, and regional minorities ^[iv]as they merge into a unique and indivisible struggle of all groups against subordina­tion and marginalisation.^[v] Through a new common sense which changes the identity of the different groups, the interests of all groups are articulated equivalently, where the free development of each is the condition for the free develop­ment of all.^[vi] In the present, there is also an attempt to depoliticise economic, social, and political decisions, making them the responsi­bility of experts, restricting the subversive nature of the democratic struggle.^[vii]  This is seen in the anti-egalitar­ian, hier­archical, neo-liberal defence of the free market economy^[viii], challeng­ing the attempt to eclipse a "universal", epistemological discourse^[ix] by the dis­courses of the resis­tance of marginal populations^[x] which provide the foundations for what Laclau and Mouffe have called the "democratic revol­ution."^[xi]  Nevertheless, the thoughtful, kinder and gentler Prince(Eisenhower) must hone his virtu to win the new game of the politics of inclusion ; a new politics of the present(as Laclau and Mouffe demonstrate) which is not "zero sum" and which gives the subordi­nated the hope for improvement in the human condition while Rousseau assures us that the pursuit of the knowledge of self is still a worthy and spiri­tually fulfilling enterprise. Similarly, Machiavelli lamented the loss of an order(Roman) that celebrated human equity.   Eisenhower's legacy demonstrates a celebration of this regard.  May the "uncertain" follow as the "third way" is quite synonymous with the "way" as in cast your net on the other side.   

Epictetus informs us least about the present conditions. While providing us with proverbial and ecclesiastical writings, he works within a paradigm of divine reason and absolute concepts of truth; both of which have been discluded in the Postmodern discourse. Moreover, he does not provide any insight into the end of grand narratives, the decentering of the humanist subject, micropolitics, simulacrum, or any of the other characteristics of postmodernism.   The ancient concept of self in relation to the postmodern concept of self is one of great contrast.  In many senses, the postmodern concept appears to be a fulfilment of the ancients' warnings and fears of what would happen to men who lack the knowledge of self.  To answer this question, I used Alcibiades, Epictetus, Jameson, and Kroker.  

The ancient concept of self found in Plato and Epictetus is that of a divinely rational and spiritual being which lives in conflict with his physical nature.  These theorists teach us that if a man is to live a just or right life, self knowl­edge is a necessity, enabling him to take care of him­self.^[xii]  They also demonstrate that deception of self can only occur, leading to mistakes in life, when one is ignorant and possesses the conceit of knowledge^[xiii].  A man ignorant of his own needs will fall into error and lead a life of misery. As a result, the admittance and embrace of one's ignorance is the first step one must take to acquire self knowledge.  Unless we are convicted that we do not know anything, we will continue to make errors out of a state of false knowl­edge.^[xiv]  Upon recognition of our ignorance, we can begin to inquire and to examine ourselves and our true nature.^[xv]  Essential­ly, knowl­edge of the self should bring man into acquaint­ance with vir­tue.^[xvi]   It is through the acquisition of virtue that a man will know how to take care of himself and others, pursuing a path of human develop­ment that will lead to improvement as opposed to corruption.

Both Plato and Epictetus see human development as the improvement of one's soul and not as the improvement of things which one may possess.^[xvii]  As a result, they both express the necessity for men to make contact with that which is divine.  Plato says that a man who knows that he does not know, entrusts his affairs to a superior being^[xviii] which for him is God as he places faith in his divine oracle.^[xix]  Although these theorists concepts of God are not the same, they both place man under the charge of the divine.  For Epictetus, man is under the charge of reason which is that part of the divine imparted to men in creation.^[xx]  In their writings, there is an evident relation­ship between human develop­ment and self knowledge.  Man and mankind can develop so that they either improve upon their condition or become corrupted.  The course of human development which one takes is dependent upon the extent of the knowledge of self which one acquires.  The knowledge of the things of this world without the knowledge of self, will result in a man pursuing knowledge to satisfy his desire for riches, power, and wealth,^[xxi] leading to debauchery as opposed to betterment. 

If human development is simply motivated by the desire to find ways to acquire more comforts, wealth, riches, and might, it will lead to misery as men are ignorant and become increas­ingly ignorant through their pursuit.^[xxii]  As Plato said, it is "...not he who has riches, but he who has wisdom that is delivered from his mis­ery."^[xxiii] As a result, the soul will develop in accord­ance with its materialistic or its spiritual goals.

In a negative manifestation of the Ancient's concept of self, Postmodern man lives in plato's "cave" of delirium, false con­sciousness, virtual reality, depraved emotion, and fragmented existence as Jameson and Kroker demonstrate.

Jameson tells us that man, as the centred subject, has been dissolved by seeking increasing efficiency, developing a postmodern world of organisational bureaucracy.^[xxiv]  He possesses a decentered psyche and no longer experiences alienation and anxiety in addition to other human emotions but is a fragmented being where, although there is no longer a self present to do the feel­ing^[xxv], one can experience intensities; "...free floating and impersonal and (which­) tend to be dominated by a peculiar kind of euphoria."^[xxvi]  These inten­sities are fed by man's new appetite for a world transformed into images of itself and never ending spectacles.  Postmodern society is the society of the "cave" where mental space is that of a degraded "objective spirit"^[xxvii] and where cultural production only represents society's ideas and stereotypes about the past.  The dim fire light of Plato's cave makes it difficult to not only see and know oneself but to emerge from one's hovel and look upon the "putative real world"^[xxviii] illuminated by the elucidat­ing sun.  All that postmodern man sees is a trace of his mental images of the past and of reality upon the confining walls of the society of the simulac­rum which has colonised his unconscious through media and advertising.

Assuming to know, we have become self deceived, as the ancients warned.  And by seeking to improve things as opposed to the self, we have come upon the "...ultimate contemporary fetishisation of the human body...acquiring a glossy skin, a stereoscopic illu­sion."^[xxix]  Through seeking to relentlessly improve things and not the soul, we have crushed human life altogether through technology; that alienated power which turns back on us and against us and seems to "...Con­sti­tute the massive dystopian horizon of our collective as well as our individual praxis."^[xxx] The ancients warned us that if human improvement is motivated only by the attainment of comforts, it would lead to misery.  And without the knowledge of self, there is nothing left "...but that which is deplor­able and reprehensible..."^[xxxi]. We fulfil our addiction to images of the past, stereotypes, or texts, removing any "...practi­cal sense of the future and of the collec­tive project, thereby abandoning the thinking of future change to fantasies of sheer catastrophe and inexplicable cataclysm, from visions of "terrorism" on the social level to those of cancer on the personal."^[xxxii] As we glorify­ and shape ourselves for the "Almighty" commodity, "having" has become more important than being(Debord) and all we can look forward to is imaginary tranquillity at the price of real happi­ness(Rousseau).

Through virtual reality, postmodern man can buy imaginary tranquillity.  HE has become "...crash bodies always on the hunt for a new techno-thrill."^[xxxiii], not self knowledge.  HE has come to a point where he has been born into the "cave" or electronic cage of virtual reality.  He has "..always lived virtually...(where he)...have never had direct knowledge of a (natural) world outside the electronic frontier."^[xxxiv]  These observations give credence to the ancients exhortations, albeit, in a negative sense. But, HE will get a sense of the  real world once he works  in Latin America, England or Europe.  He will also have a wife and seven children. 

The self, as Kroker demonstrates, has become virtual such that it is purely aesthetic, disappearing into the "...electronic vortex of the floating self (and) is finally liberated of (fixed) identity, of determinate gender, of (localised) history, and of (bodily) subjectiv­ity...which means the triumph of illu­sion...(while)...the virtual self...vanishes down the electronic highway from nothing to nowhere."^[xxxv]

Postmodern man is the willing practitioner of this new world of the floating self, spasm, and of organs without bodies as he accepts and pursues the material promises of this world which purport maximum informa­tion, wealth and mobility, but which, in fact, give us little under­standing and (lead to) alienated masses harmonious­ly dependent on elite command centres.^[xxxvi] 

 This new virtual experience has given us a techno-skin and has shut down a whole range of human experiences, replacing them with thrills and intensities as Jameson concurs.  We have come to a historical place where technology is the latest and most grisly manifestation of Nietzsche's will to power, leaving the self as a torn and fragmented victim.  Nevertheless, Kroker says that to "Know your self" is still an attainable goal but that self recognition is not so much about knowing the self but about becoming aware and "...discovering anew the shock of the real."^[xxxvii]  It is about walking out of the "cave" of the electronic cage of virtual reality and into the real (if not the natural) world.  Yet, as the ancients say, the knowledge of self is a process of training of the spirit as an athlete trains the body for competition.  It begins with awareness and awareness begins with the acceptance of ignorance and, in the postmodern, the shock of the real.  So let it be that man leaves the illusions of the simulacrum, the "cave", and of virtual reality so that he may begin to pursue knowledge without assuming to know and hopefully realise a new humanity not filled only with the "hope" of catas­trophe and holocaust but improvement within the human condition.
