Phillis Wheatley discovered the notion of a twisted soul among free black people; someone who would have children to participate in a social journey but could not accept them as good unless someone else could confirm their goodness.  It is because they were his children and he was afraid of judgment and criticism.  It is because he could not believe he could produce anything good. He would give money to other people's children as they lied to him that he had a child with another man's wife.  There was no evidence of this. The phenomena was recognised for another 100 years and was embodied in the story about the Uncle Tom. The child of an Uncle Tom has to work very hard to carry his father's burden of social apprehension. He would perceive everything as rejection as if people did not want to sit with them in public.    But, he or she may not be aware of his willingness to put out his genetic children who work above the average.  The children were told to work twice as hard.   The issue is they did not understand his self-loathing while growing up. He had actually manifested his self-loathing by borrowed people's writing to complete an English degree and justified it by saying he/she did not have a mother or father; so he told the white lecturer but in private with his family and some friends she/he boasted about his/her quarter Asian ancestry. Then, he would talk about the history of black people, the injustice they suffer in being used and how they work really hard. He had borrowed the writings of a genuine English graduate who sweat and  paid his own fare to England by scooner .   Why does he do it if he is free and equal enough to be accepted at a White man's college? Phillis thought Judas I Iscariot who betrayed may have had some children since this behavior was inexplicable. They might be tall and good looking but he's a self loathing Tom who burns down his own children in the service of an imagined master that says loathing of self is his function.  Look at his grand children as an expression of his misunderstanding of Family. Look. He puts himself against his own next generation to the benefit of everyone else and their understanding as to why you send children to school and as to why you should be very supportive and proud of your produce that graduate with higher than a c average. Did you know 56 percent is a B in England? What about a genuine 93 percent? Look and see!
