It could be that Herod, as a child of Mephibosheth who is a child of Israel saw his calling meet Yeshua in that cross road and confirmation in time as Yeshua is a child of David who is a child of Israel. They are both children of Abraham. They should of shaken hands, accepted their mutual calling and the mutual message concerning a untied Israel under one government and one direction; one Israel.

Herod and Yeshua came back with the same message 2000 years ago.; that there is one people of Israel and one kingdom.  Herod may have come under a Roman occupation and may have been motivated more by the fulfillment of a physical Kingdom, Saul's Kingdom at any cost while Yeshua's purpose was spiritual as God inspired to minister in the calling of David to remind the nation that the purpose of the kingdom was not only physical but spiritual in calling. This tension revolve through history until someone realizes that the purpose of the first occupation under Babylon was to remind Israel of its call out of Egypt as one nation and one people and bring to end the division presented by any notion of two kingdoms or peoples among them.  It is one nation as God used both Herod and Yeshua to communicate His message to the children of Abraham, the children of Jacob.  David is not special as it is truly a calling on all of the children of Israel.
